Gus Fairbairn, aka Alabaster DePlume, has a pocketful of phrases that he uses as he is walking down the street or holding court. For a long time, the Mancunian would tell anyone who’d listen that they were doing very well. More recently, it’s another phrase with a similar effect: “Don’t forget you’re precious.”
Behind the offbeat name is an offbeat talent who walks a wavering line between improvisational saxophonist and performance poet. His fluid live music performances reassure with behaviour and sound while they challenge with thoughts and words.
“Totally unique… Very, very brilliant indeed” – Max Reinhardt, BBC Radio 3
“A reminder of how vital and adventurous music can be” – Laura Barton, The Guardian
